subarctic research

celebrating 50 years

investing in the future

For 50 years, the Churchill Northern Studies Centre has been a place where people come to learn about, and from the North. Situated along the shores of Hudson Bay, the Centre has been shaped by the land, water, wildlife, and the communities connected to this place since time immemorial. What has grown over five decades is more than a research facility; it is a space grounded in relationships, where knowledge is shared through experience, connection, and respect.

Over the past 50 years, the CNSC has supported thousands of researchers, students, educators, and visitors from around the world. Research conducted here has contributed to a deeper understanding of northern ecosystems, wildlife, and climate systems, informing broader conversations around environmental change and stewardship. At the same time, the Centre has created transformative educational experiences that connect people directly to the land, fostering reflection, responsibility, and a lasting sense of connection to the North.

This work has been shaped and strengthened through ongoing relationships with northern communities, Knowledge Keepers, educators, and partners. These collaborations have ensured that learning and research at the CNSC are grounded in respect, reciprocity, and local knowledge. The impact of the Centre extends far beyond measurable outcomes; it lives in the stories, relationships, and shared understandings that continue to grow over time.

As the North continues to change, the role of the CNSC remains as important as ever. Looking ahead, the next 50 years will build on this foundation by advancing northern research, expanding land based and experiential learning opportunities, strengthening community partnerships, and investing in sustainable infrastructure. This ongoing work will continue to support meaningful connections to the North while contributing to a deeper understanding of the environments and communities that define it.

Whether you choose to donate, partner, or share our story, your support strengthens the future of northern research and education.
