What Is the Taiga?

The taiga biome, also called the boreal forest, stretches across the Northern Hemisphere just south of the Arctic Circle. It’s known for long, cold winters, short summers, and forests dominated by spruce, fir, and other conifers. Compared with the tundra, the taiga usually has deeper soils, more shelter from wind, and enough warmth in the growing season to support trees.

  • Dense evergreen forests: Needle-bearing trees are built to conserve water and survive cold winters.
  • More wildlife cover: Forest habitat supports birds, mammals, and insects that rely on tree cover.
  • Long winters, short summers: The climate is still harsh, but less extreme than tundra in many places.
  • Acidic, nutrient-poor soils: Decomposition is slow because cold temperatures limit biological activity.

What Is the Tundra?

The tundra biome is colder, drier, and notably treeless. It is found in Arctic regions and on high mountains, where conditions are too harsh for trees to grow. The tundra has a very short growing season, strong winds, and vegetation made up mainly of low shrubs, grasses, mosses, and lichens. A defining feature of much Arctic tundra is permafrost, or ground that remains frozen for long periods below the surface.

  • No trees: Cold, wind, and shallow active soil layers limit root growth.
  • Low-growing plants: Mosses, lichens, sedges, and dwarf shrubs dominate.
