COVID Update:
At the Churchill Northern Studies Centre, we like to think green in every shade.
Fresh veggies sprout in our Rocket Greens farm, food scraps find new life through composting, and even our building is designed to tread lightly on the planet.
By saving energy and shrinking waste, we save money too—so more of every dollar fuels our mission.
Fresh greens in every season—grown for Churchill, by Churchill. See how it works, sign up, or show your support.

Learn moreBy growing and distributing lettuce locally, we’re significantly cutting fossil fuel use;. Our entire weekly delivery route emits just 15kg of CO₂ — less than a third of the emissions from a single shipment coming from the south.
In 2024, we launched our new compost program that is on track to divert 18,700 lbs of food waste from our landfill annually, preventing over two metric tons of carbon emissions.
With enough funding, we could welcome 20 new households into our subsidized Rocket Greens program. If those households also participate in our compost service, 10,000 lbs of organic waste could be diverted from the landfill.
Our building is efficient, innovative, and built for the North
The building's long shape, tapered west end, and raised floor are designed to allow strong winds to scour snow away, reducing the need for clearing and keeping the facility accessible and safe.
The facility uses waterless composting toilets and biofiltration for wastewater, reducing reliance on external municipal services in its remote location.
It incorporates heat recovery, intelligent building controls, and an energy-efficient kitchen with best-in-class ventilation.
