The impact of the churchill Northern studies centre
There are places in the world that seem to demand attention, and Churchill, Manitoba, is one of them. Polar bears congregate on its shores each fall, drawn from the denning grounds of nearby Wapusk National Park. Beluga whales crowd the Churchill River each summer. The town sits directly beneath the auroral oval, meaning the northern lights are active here more than 300 nights a year. In spring, migratory birds arrive in great numbers, and across the tundra and boreal forest, over 500 species of arctic wildflowers and boreal plants grow in the brief warm season. Beneath it all, the permafrost is thawing.
This is the place we’ve called home for 50 years. Founded in 1976 and located 23 km east of Churchill along the Hudson Bay seacoast, the Churchill Northern Studies Centre (CNSC) sits at the meeting point of three major biomes: arctic marine, northern boreal forest, and tundra.
What began as a bold local vision has grown into a year-round hub for science, education, and community engagement — a place where some of the most urgent questions about climate, wildlife, and northern life can be explored firsthand. As we mark our 50th anniversary in 2026, the mission that has guided us from the start feels more necessary than ever: to understand and sustain the North.
Here’s a look at our 50 years of service and the strides we’ve made for science, community, and continuity in the North.
A Northern research centre from the start
From the beginning, the Centre was meant to be more than a place where researchers could stay between field outings. Early planning framed it as a northern resource centre that would support science, offer university-level instruction, and make knowledge accessible to both the public and the scientific community.
That vision was rooted in what Churchill uniquely offers. To the east lies Wapusk National Park, protecting one of the most significant polar bear denning areas in the world. To the southeast stretches the Hudson Bay Lowland, the largest peatland in North America. The result is an extraordinary convergence of ecosystems and an equally extraordinary range of species, habitats, and environmental processes available for study within a short distance of the Centre’s doors. The Centre was always intended to bridge scientific work, local knowledge, and public understanding. That foundation shaped everything that followed.
Making Northern Science possible
One of the Centre’s greatest long-term contributions has been straightforward but essential: making northern science possible. Over five decades, it has supported researchers with accommodations, meals, equipment rentals, lab space, logistical coordination, and year-round access to the western Hudson Bay region.
By 2006, the Centre had recorded the busiest year in its history, supporting 60 research projects involving more than 200 researchers and students from 25 universities and government agencies worldwide. The science it has helped enable spans a remarkable range of topics, including:
- Polar bears and marine mammals
- Shorebirds and migratory ecology
- Arctic foxes, caribou, seals, and other northern species
- Permafrost and tundra systems
- Snow and ice dynamics
- Climate-related ecological change

The Centre’s impact lies not only in discoveries made in Churchill, but in the practical infrastructure that allows those discoveries to happen at all.
A place to study arctic change
As concerns about Arctic warming grew, the Centre’s importance only deepened. Churchill offers something rare: a place where environmental change is not abstract. It can be seen in thawing permafrost, shifting seasonal timing, changing wildlife behaviour, and the physical landscape itself.
Research supported by the Centre has examined warming impacts on polar bears, changes in marine and coastal ecosystems, shifts in the tundra-forest-tundra boundary, and the effects of climate change on tourism and community life. By helping researchers work in this setting — at the literal edge of the Arctic, where multiple ecosystems meet and interact — the Centre has played a meaningful role in advancing public understanding of what’s actually happening in the North.
From field course to learning vacations
Research has always been central to the CNSC, but education has been equally important. Early on, the Centre offered field courses and university instruction in Arctic ecosystems, climatology, geomorphology, and biological resource management. Over time, that mission expanded to reach lifelong learners, youth groups, and the general public.
That evolution gave rise to one of CNSC’s signature strengths: Learning Vacations. These immersive, science-based programs run throughout the arctic seasons and typically last five to seven days, helping open the North to much wider audiences. Popular offerings include:
- Winter Skies: Northern lights viewing paired with science programming
- Spring’s Wings: Shorebird migration and subarctic ecology
- Belugas in the Bay: Summer wildlife experiences on Hudson Bay
- Lords of the Arctic: Fall polar bear season on the tundra
More than attracting visitors, these programs have helped people form personal, memorable connections to the wildlife and research happening around them, extending Arctic education far beyond Churchill itself.
Connecting Research, youth, and community
The Centre has also become more deeply woven into the local life and culture over the years. Community-facing work has included:
- School and youth programming
- Cultural demonstrations and Indigenous teachings
- Artist residencies
- Public tours and educational events, including day tours of the LEED Silver facility, local ecology, and the historic Rocket Range
In 2015–16, the Centre recorded 960 youth user days, with more than 300 young people participating in subarctic learning experiences. That kind of engagement matters enormously. CNSC’s influence has never been limited to researchers and tourists; the Centre has helped nurture the next generation of northern learners, scientists, and community members.
A Major Turning Point: Renewal and Reinvention
By the mid-2000s, the Centre’s aging facilities could no longer fully support the growing demand for northern research and education. Renewal planning began intentionally. The goal was not simply to replace an old building, but to create a stronger, more sustainable home for the Centre’s future work.
The Centre envisioned a facility with improved lab space, better researcher accommodations, flexible classrooms, energy-efficient design, and a layout that preserved the Centre’s collaborative atmosphere. The new building, which opened in 2011, earned LEED Silver certification and marked a genuine leap forward, giving the CNSC a modern home suited to contemporary northern science.
Sustainability in Practice
Sustainability is not just a research topic at CNSC, but part of how we operate. Our LEED Silver facility reflected that shift through efficient design, but we’ve pushed that commitment further in recent years, particularly through local food production.
Rocket Greens, our hydroponic growing initiative, has evolved into a broader sustainability effort that encompasses fresh local produce, composting, and community-focused food access. In a remote northern community where food costs and transportation challenges are significant realities, this work is both practical and principled. It reduces our dependence on long southern supply chains, supports fresher, locally sourced food, and demonstrates that “sustaining the North” can be as hands-on as tending a growing rack in winter.
Resilience Through Change
Our history is also a story of resilience. Over 50 years, we have adapted through lean periods, leadership transitions, infrastructure challenges, the 2017 rail outage that cut Churchill off from southern supply routes, and the disruptions of COVID-19. Through each of those moments, we kept supporting research, serving learners, and showing up for our community.
That durability is something we carry with pride into our next 50 years.

We have helped turn Churchill into a place of discovery, learning, and stewardship, supporting researchers, educating visitors, engaging youth, and strengthening the ties between science and community.
The North is changing faster than almost anywhere else on Earth. As it does, places that connect science, education, sustainability, and community will only matter more. For half a century, we’ve worked hard to expand northern science, and we aren’t slowing down.
